Competa
Competa is 27km from Nerja and
along quite a windy road. It lies on the southern slopes of the Sierra
Almijara and is 650 meters above sea level. The district contains
many springs and streams that bring down water to the surrounding
mountains. Being close to the Tejada and Almijara Sierras it is a good
starting-point for excursions and hikers.
The main agricultural product of the area is the grape, and the wineries of
Competa are famed for producing one of the finest wines of Malaga. Once
again the village is Moorish, and has a central square called the Plaza de
Almijara, with the Church of La Asuncion built at the end of the 16th century,
and had a ochre-coloured tower added to in the late 19th century, but was
finally finished in 1935. Competa also contains two hermitages: that of
San Anton dating back to the 18th century, and that of San Sebastian.
